Lecturer in Policing

Biography Dr Charles Arewa has joined the University of Salford’s policing team from The University of Coventry where he was a lecturer in professional policing since 2019 and has led a range of modules in policing and professional policing. Charles is a member of the University’s alumni having studied his BSc in Criminology, MA in Security and Intelligence Studies and PhD at Salford. His background is in critical criminology, and his PhD in criminology was amongst the first to examine policing and race and police/ community relations with African populations residing in the Netherlands. Charles also has significant experience in the field of mental health and was a mental health worker within a Medium Secure Unit in NW England for over ten years. Charles has also attended the Turkish National Police Academy Ankara, where he studied firearms handling and community policing. This link allowed him to contribute to research on the PKK and terrorism in Turkey.
Charles has completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching at Coventry University which has assisted him to develop a pedagogically informed approach to teaching professional policing modules and join the HEA as a Fellow. Furthermore, he holds a certificate in organized crime investigation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (TADOC) Ankara Turkey which has further enhanced his practitioner knowledge.
Charles is a reviewer for policing journals and journals for criminological research policy and practice. He is at the start of his postdoctoral career and is currently working on a range of publications flowing from his PhD.
