Abstract
This chapter describes the fundamental technical aspects of current TV production. It provides an overview of the ways in which technical limitations inherent in image capture have become a part of the ‘grammar’ of storytelling. It talks about current video acquisition technology, types of cameras currently available, and the issues of shooting for multiple aspect ratios. The chapter discusses the roles of those taking part in producing the content for a live broadcast. It deals with current delivery methods, common codecs and transport protocols. The Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED), or Light Emitting Polymer (LEP), is a class of display technology that has been developing steadily. The chapter surveys spatial reproduction systems, and considers how legacy video and audio formats are treated in the context of today's distribution formats. Finally, the chapter proposes an approach to producing content fit for the emerging media landscape: format-agnostic media.
