Abstract

The distribution of Corixidae in stable habitats (lakes)
has been shown to be related to a series of environmental
parameters, for example major ion concentrations and the
accumulation of vegetation and organic matter. (Macan
1954; Savage 1982, 1989). It is considered that similar
ecological relationships probably occur in potentially
unstable habitats. It appears that they may be utilised
as biological indicators of water quality and for the
monitoring of changing water quality in relation to both
eutrophication and acidification. (Henrikson and Oscarson
1985; Jansson 1987).
This supposition is discussed in relation to a number of
environmental parameters, primarily conductivity (as a
summation of major ion and nutrient concentrations), and
the accumulation of organic matter and vegetation.
It was found that corixids are unable to act as accurate
biological indicator due to a poor understanding of their
autecology and extensive overlapping of their ecological
requirements.
A possible application is discussed as by ordination they
have the potential to act as marker species of unusual
habitats in a geographical region.
