Abstract

This thesis addresses the question: what is a green
building? This question is fundamental to those
academics, research bodies and practising construction
professionals who seek to audit and to assess green
buildings. It seeks to illuminate the breadth and foci of
the current received wisdom in this area of interest.
Green buildings are defined in terms of the broader green
criteria and also criteria particular to buildings.
Initially political and economic definitions are
discussed to establish the criteria which characterise
greenness and cover the spectrum of ideas from
environmentalism to ecologism. The thesis moves on to
discuss and establish definitions of green buildings and
to identify field leaders. The rationale and consistency
of the definitions are examined and discussed to
illuminate the differences in current thinking on the
definition of green buildings. A multidimensional
scalogram analysis is undertaken to dissect the
definitions and to give insight into the definition of
green building. In the penultimate chapter conclusions
are drawn and the final chapter posits an agenda for
research to further illuminate and to progress our
understanding of green buildings.
