Abstract

Fragmentation is a key feature of the construction industry. This problem
needs tackling in order to improve efficiency, reduce costs and making
construction industry more competitive. Many systems were introduced,
within the last two decades, with the aim of improving integration for the
construction industry. GALLICON was one of these systems. Object
orientated technology, using Windows as a platform and the use of
internationally accepted data protocols made GALLICON a better system
than many others in many aspects.
GALLICON showed that it could be implemented for housing sector and
wastewater treatment plants.
However GALLICON lacks the ability to model Life Cycle Costing (LCC).
LCC deals with estimating the costs involved with any project for the whole
duration of the project's life cycle (i.e. from inception, planning, building to
operation). The aim of this research is to deliver a conceptual model for the
application of LCC in the wastewater treatment plants. The limited resources
of this research meant that it could only be based upon data mainly used in the
UK. Also a package wastewater treatment plant was used as a model to base
the research upon. Only essential processes were mainly looked at. Processes
involved in wastewater treatment plants were identified. A hierarchy for these
processes was drawn. Then an IDEFO (Integrated Computer Aided
Manufacturing Definition) model of these processes was created.
The research proved that making a proper model for the application of LCC in
package wastewater plants was possible. Further research into different types
of Waste Water Treatment (WWT) plants and for other locations around the
world is needed to complete model's data needed for Waste Water Treatment
Plants (WWTP) for the application of LCC in GALLICON.
