Independence : confused, outdated or core of occupational therapy?

Abstract

Introduction: Independence has been described as a
core outcome of occupational therapy, but what does
“independence” mean?
Perceptions of independence are linked to disability models
(Goble 2004). Professionals’ definitions tend to relate to doing
alone (Reindal 1999), whereas disabled people, particularly
those aligned to the independent living movement, describe
independence as having control over one’s life (Gillinson et al
2005). Within occupational therapy (OT) theory, independence
has been described in a variety of ways, including that it
comprises of autonomy (making choices) and competence
to perform tasks (Rogers 1982): a description that straddles
independent living and professional perspectives.
Clarity about the meaning of independence within occupational
therapy may improve communication with colleagues and
disabled people, but how should independence be defined?
Given changes in service provision, is a focus on independence
now outdated?
Methods: This round table aims to discuss the relevance and
meaning of independence in contemporary occupational
therapy.
It will promote debate about:
• whether a shared understanding of independence would be
helpful to our profession;
• how occupational therapists interpret independence in
practice, theory and research; and
• the relative importance of independence in future practice.
Outcomes: The different interpretations of independence and
perceptions of its relevance will be documented. An awareness
of the differences in definitions of independence could improve
communication with service users. As a profession, this debate
could be used to clarify our interpretation of independence and
articulate its place in theory, research and practice.
