Abstract

Within this article, the author will examine what an appraisal is
and how, if done correctly, it supports and develops quality care.
Appraisals receive a negative press with both employees and
managers. Reasons for this will be explored before moving on
to identify the purpose and benefits that following an appraisal
process brings. The many different forms that appraisals can
take will be highlighted. What factors make up an appraisal will
be discussed, from reviewing past performance to the setting of
realistic and yet challenging goals. The importance of preparation
for the support worker prior to the appraisal process will be
highlighted as a key factor to success.
