Abstract
This chapter overviews nonlinear effects in plasmonics. A discussion of how to create linear and nonlinear surface plasmon-polaritons is presented, and is coupled to a basic discussion of third-harmonic generation. The generation of nonlinear surface plasmon-polaritons is then discussed not only in terms of third-harmonic generation but as a consequence of the breaking of translational symmetry in a conventional interface system. The evolution of polaritons into solitons is highlighted. A detailed review of nonlinear plasmonics is then given that includes field enhancement of localized surface plasmons and controlling light with light. Switching and modulation of surface plasmon-polariton signals are then reviewed. After a discussion of nonlinear plasmonic crystals, and structured metal surfaces, some comments on metamaterials are also included. It is emphasized that nonlinear plasmonics will have an invaluable impact on future conventional and quantum nanophotonic technologies.
