The implications in North West England of the migrant cap on non-EU workers : A case study of the health and social care sector

Abstract

This report presents the findings of research focusing on the economic and social implications of the temporary and proposed permanent cap on non-EEA workers in the North West of England. The research was commissioned by Migrant Workers North West (MWNW) in July 2010 and conducted by researchers from the School of Public Policy and Professional Practice at the University of Keele and the Salford Housing & Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) at the University of Salford. The overall aim was to consider the impact of the cap being imposed on employers and their perceptions, experiences and future aspirations in respect of the use of migrant labour and business competitiveness. The research explored the Health and Social Care sector as a case study area, given the historical reliance within this sector on international labour. This report presents the findings of this research.
