Abstract

This article, the first in a series of two, provides an introduction to the subject of circulatory shock. It discusses the definition of shock, its pathophysiology and incidence, and discusses its different causes. The second part of the series will provides the reader with an overview of the acute nursing management of patients presenting with the different forms of circulatory shock.
