The stories that people tell: Receiving care from the trust report from round 3

Abstract

This is the third of four reports from a project commissioned by Ashton, Wigan and Leigh Community Healthcare. Narratives were collected from service-users to explore what it was like to be on the receiving end of the Trust's community services.
The narratives analysed for this report were collected towards the endpoint of the study, two years after the first round of data collection. Service users who had received care from Community Matrons, District Nurses and Specialist Nurses (Cardiac, Diabetes, Continence, Dermatology, Respiratory) were interviewed. On the whole they told very positive stories about high standards of care. The findings were organised around the question 'what makes these nurses so good?' under the following theme headings: a strong foundational relationship, not alone with this illness, making a difference, bespoke services, a professional and much more. The imperfections of the services were also explored, as was the use of humour in relation to illness and care.
