The value of qualitative research in the social housing sector
Ahmed, AAI
Authors
Abstract
Research in the social housing sector is usually undertaken to inform business decisions and policy formation and to identify priorities for action. It has also become important in gathering contextual information regarding performance and accountability, and it is probably due to the latter factors that much of the research undertaken by and within the sector has historically been quantitative – or statistical – in nature andoutput.
The focus of this briefing paper is to highlight the uses of
quantitative approaches to data collection and also to make a case for more use of qualitative approaches to supplement
these. The housing sector has traditionally focussed heavily on quantifiable achievements, however, qualitative research can complement a lot of the quantitative research undertaken.
