Abstract

Like many developed and developing economies around the globe, the UK has embraced the concept of the knowledge economy as a route to economic prosperity and growth. e roles that universities can play in national economic development, through collaboration with industrial partners and science exploitation, have been the subject of much policy debate. Enterprise or entrepreneurial activities have been termed the “third mission” of universities, reecting not only new funding allocated towards these aims, but the reorientation of existing research resources.
