Abstract

The Resilient Homes project is a national initiative promoted and funded by the Environment Agency. This summary describes an aspect of the project carried out between January and June 2009 by a research team from Salford University under the direction of Professor Erik Bichard. The context of the project is the need to motivate communities to address the effects of dangerous climate change by the simultaneous application of mitigation and adaptation measures. The team from the University of Salford focused on testing the attitudes of householders to taking action by investing in physical changes to housing. This included measures to protect against the increased likelihood of flooding and ability to conserve energy consumption. The aim of the research was to establish whether non-cash rewards could be used to motivate the householders to invest in these adaptation and mitigation measures.
