Abstract

The MSc Advanced Practice (Gastrointestinal Imaging) programme prepares radiographers for image interpretation and reporting, a task traditionally undertaken by medically trained radiologists. This project will support learning undertaken both in the academic and clinical setting, by providing on-going peer, tutor and self-assessment whilst off-campus. An image bank of carefully selected and verified clinical cases will be housed within the Blackboard virtual learning environment, and will be interpreted by students who report their findings in the discussion board. A facilitator will guide the students, feeding back the verified definitive report and encouraging peer review. Cases of increasing difficulty will be introduced at regular intervals throughout the year-long programme, preparing students for final summative clinical examinations. A sample of cases will be piloted / evaluated by the current cohort of students (graduating in September 2006), with any suggested amendments being introduced ready for the next cohort of students (September 2006 start). These students will have access to the full distance support package, and a further evaluation will be made in June 2007.
