Abstract

Several species of guenon Cercopithecus are threatened in the wild and European Endangered Species Programmes (EEPs) have been established for the Diana monkey Cercopithecus diana diana, Roloway monkey Cercopithecus diana roloway, L'Hoest's monkey Cercopithecus lhoesti, Hamlyn's or Owlfaced monkey Cercopithecus hamlyni and Allen's swamp monkey Allenopithecus nigroviridis. There is limited published information on the behaviour of guenons and at Edinburgh Zoo a number of studies have been carried out on these species and the less threatened De Brazza's monkey Cercopithecus neglectus. This paper presents a review of the studies on the social behaviour, hand-rearing, feeding and enclosure use of guenons and describes a range of environmental and behavioural enrichment devices which have been developed and assessed at the Zoo.
