Abstract

Book chapter about how to recognise symptoms of trauma and the importance of self-care for counsellors and psychotherapists working with people who have experienced domestic abuse (DA).

Learning objectives
1. Understand the risk factors for, and effects that DA client work can have on counsellors
2. Recognise the symptoms of adverse reactions in ourselves and others, and act upon them
3. Understand the importance of supervision, peer-debriefing, alternative work, and personal therapy
4. Understand the importance of self-care
5. Reflect on how you can cultivate self-compassion
6. Develop and use a self-care regime based on your own needs
