Abstract
Cities of the future are cities of today that have undergone multiple transformations as a result of intended or unintended interventions. City Analysis Simulation Tool (CAST) has the main objective to increase the understanding of the complexities of the development of cities into the future by applying complexity science in urban analysis. CAST interfaces with a physical city via maps, data, and geo-referencing. Thus, it uses geographic information system data as one of the input data sets, together with population data, planning data, and energy data, which are all processed concurrently to investigate responses to scenarios of design interventions. Analysis methods in CAST are based on principles of emergence and complexity. CAST can be described as a network model of the city, where connectivity between different cell types and their individual metabolism determines the cell behaviour and the behaviour of the overall system.
