Abstract

The career trajectories of women in academia are marked by unique challenges, particularly for those over 50, a group that is underrepresented in senior academic positions. This pilot study explores the barriers and facilitators impacting workplace well-being among female psychology professors aged 50 and above. The research is rooted in the intersection of age, gender, and professional identity, considering the implications of menopause, workplace biases, and career progression.

Using a qualitative methodology, the study incorporates semi-structured interviews with 5 participants per region (Germany, the UK, Italy, & Poland). Reflexive thematic analysis is used to identify critical factors influencing well-being, such as workplace culture, support systems, and stereotypes.

The findings contribute to understanding the systemic challenges and potential interventions for supporting older women in academia, emphasizing the need for policy reforms and tailored support mechanisms. This research aligns with broader efforts to address gender gaps and ensure equitable opportunities in leadership and career advancement for women in higher education.
