Abstract

The construction industry is currently facing significant challenges, including low productivity and negative environmental impacts. This paper explores the concept of modern methods of construction, aiming to clarify its scope and differentiate it from traditional construction methods. The research aims to develop a four-level model of modern methods of construction, which includes: (1) off-site production, (2) industrialised building, (3) construction using smart digital technologies, and (4) construction automation. While there is a wealth of literature on modern methods of construction, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding of its various aspects. This study employs a systematic literature review and analysis to establish a theoretical framework. The findings indicate that modern methods of construction offers numerous benefits, such as reduced time and costs, yet also presents challenges, including high initial investment and the need for skilled labour. This research holds significant implications for managers and policymakers in the construction sector, enhancing their understanding of the potential applications of modern methods of construction in Vietnam.
