Measurement of the optical properties of gold at cryogenic temperatures (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

Optical constants of gold are measured at cryogenic temperatures. The imaginary part of epsilon exhibits a drop at longer wavelengths. This directly demonstrates that performance of metal-based optical devices can be improved by cryogenic cooling.

Curved waveguide Bragg gratings on a chip (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

We demonstrate curved waveguide Bragg gratings on an SOI chip. Our approach allows long Bragg gratings to be fabricated on an extremely small area, avoiding write-field stitching errors, typically introduced in the fabrication process.

Compact chip-scale filter based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings (2010)
Journal Article
Zamek, S., Tan, D., Khajavikhan, M., Ayache, M., Nezhad, M., & Fainman, Y. (2010). Compact chip-scale filter based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings. Optics Letters, 35(20), 3477-3479. https://doi.org/10.1364/OL.35.003477

We propose a method for miniaturization of filters based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings, so that long structures can be packed into a small area on a chip. This eliminates the stitching errors introduced in the fabrication process, which compromi... Read More about Compact chip-scale filter based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings.

Active and passive nanophotonics for information systems applications (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

This paper explores the role of nanotechnology with focus on nanophotonics in dielectric, metal, and semiconductor inhomogeneous metamaterials and devices for optical communications, information and signal processing, and sensing.

Steroid concentrations in plasma, whole blood and brain: Effects of saline perfusion to remove blood contamination from brain (2010)
Journal Article

The brain and other organs locally synthesize steroids. Local synthesis is suggested when steroid levels are higher in tissue than in the circulation. However, measurement of both circulating and tissue steroid levels are subject to methodological co... Using the knowledge transfer partnership model as a method of transferring BIM and lean process related knowledge between academia and industry: A case study approach (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

This paper looks at the vehicle of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between academia and business and how successful it is in reaching its range of objectives and developing theoretical and practical educational materials for BIM curriculums.... Antimicrobial activity of titania/silver and titania/copper films prepared by CVD (2010)
Journal Article
Foster, H., Sheel, D., Sheel, P., Evans, P., Varghese, S., Rutschke, N., & Yates, H. (2010). Antimicrobial activity of titania/silver and titania/copper films prepared by CVD. Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, 216(2-3), 283-289. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jphotochem.2010.09.017

We have previously reported the production of photocatalytically active films of TiO2/Ag and TiO2/CuO grown by atmospheric pressure thermal CVD that had high antimicrobial activity. The present study compares the activity of dual layers and co-deposi... Read More about Antimicrobial activity of titania/silver and titania/copper films prepared by CVD.

Impact of culture towards disaster risk reduction (2010)
Journal Article
Kulatunga, U. (2010). Impact of culture towards disaster risk reduction. International Journal of Strategic Property Management, 14(4), 304-313. https://doi.org/10.3846/ijspm.2010.23

Number of natural disasters has risen sharply worldwide making the risk of disasters a global concern. These disasters have created significant losses and damages to humans, economy and society. Despite the losses and damages created by disasters, so... Read More about Impact of culture towards disaster risk reduction.

Building up resilience of construction sector SMEs and their supply chains to extreme weather events (2010)
Journal Article
Wedawatta, G., Ingirige, B., & Amaratunga, R. (2010). Building up resilience of construction sector SMEs and their supply chains to extreme weather events. International Journal of Strategic Property Management, 14(4), 362-375. https://doi.org/10.3846/ijspm.2010.27

Wider scientific community now accept that the threat of climate change as real and thus acknowledge the importance of implementing adaptation measures in a global context. In the UK, the physical effects of climate change are likely to be directly f... Read More about Building up resilience of construction sector SMEs and their supply chains to extreme weather events.

Disaster knowledge factors in managing disasters successfully (2010)
Journal Article
Seneviratne, K., Baldry, D., & Pathirage, C. (2010). Disaster knowledge factors in managing disasters successfully. International Journal of Strategic Property Management, 14(4), 376-390. https://doi.org/10.3846/ijspm.2010.28

The number of reported natural disasters has increased steadily over the past century and risen very sharply during the past decade. These bring about the loss of lives, property, employment and damage to the physical infrastructure and the environme... Read More about Disaster knowledge factors in managing disasters successfully.
