Relativistic & pseudo-relativistic connections in optical pulse propagation (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Christian, J., McDonald, G., Lundie, M., & Lancaster, G. (2011, June). Relativistic & pseudo-relativistic connections in optical pulse propagation. Poster presented at College Research Showcase Day, University of Salford, Greater Manchester, UK

We explore a more complete model for describing the evolution of scalar optical pulses in generic nonlinear waveguides. The electromagnetic wave envelope satisfies a dimensionless equation that is of the Helmholtz type. Our
approach is to retain the... Read More about Relativistic & pseudo-relativistic connections in optical pulse propagation.

Arbitrary-angle scattering of spatial solitons from dielectric optical interfaces (2011)
Presentation / Conference
McCoy, E., Christian, J., & McDonald, G. (2011, June). Arbitrary-angle scattering of spatial solitons from dielectric optical interfaces. Poster presented at College Research Showcase Day, University of Salford, Greater Manchester, UK

Wave–interface phenomena appear throughout Nature and are intrinsically angular in character. For instance, the behaviour of light waves at material boundaries underpins the entire field of optics. The seminal works on nonlinear
beam refraction [1]... Read More about Arbitrary-angle scattering of spatial solitons from dielectric optical interfaces.

The role of boundary conditions in kaleidoscope laser modes (2011)
Presentation / Conference
McDonald, G., Christian, J., & Huang, J. (2011, June). The role of boundary conditions in kaleidoscope laser modes. Poster presented at College Research Showcase Day, University of Salford, Greater Manchester, UK

The complex character of transverse eigenmodes in one-dimensional (1D) unstable cavity lasers has been known for many years [1]. Early collaborations showed that the origin of such fractal (i.e., multiple spatial scale) structure lies in a subtle int... Cavity-enhanced broadband light generation (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Rose, C., McDonald, G., & Christian, J. (2011, June). Cavity-enhanced broadband light generation. Poster presented at College Research Showcase Day, University of Salford, Greater Manchester, UK

Broadband (multiline frequency) light combs present a wealth of applications, ranging from meteorology, sensing and measurements to those potentially in the domain of
attosecond science. We report here on detailed investigations of, what we believe... Read More about Cavity-enhanced broadband light generation.

A new framework for online rule threshold adjustment in intrusion detection (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Moghimi, M., & Saraee, M. (2011, June). A new framework for online rule threshold adjustment in intrusion detection. Presented at 2011 CSI International Symposium on Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), Tehran

Generally, rule-based systems work to make sense of a large volume of alerts generated by the intrusion detection systems (IDSs) every minute. Hence, it is very significant to verify that these systems are error-free and that the rules are suitable f... Feasibility study and micrositing applications for a wind farm: A case study for northwest Turkey (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Ozturk, Z. (2011, June). Feasibility study and micrositing applications for a wind farm: A case study for northwest Turkey. Presented at SPARC 2011, University of Salford

Turkey has a booming energy demand due to accelerated development in both social and industrial areas. In Turkey, almost all types of renewable energy sources are existent with high potentials but due to economical aspects, these are not utilised as... Spontaneous spatial fractals: universal contexts and applications (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Mcdonald, G., Christian, J., Heyes, A., Millington, N., Walsh, T., & Huang, J. (2011, May). Spontaneous spatial fractals: universal contexts and applications. Presented at CLEO Europe - EQEC 2011, Munich, Germany

We report on our latest research in the field of spontaneous spatial fractal patterns. New analyses, results and potential applications are reported for nonlinear ring cavities and kaleidoscope laser systems.

Universality in relativistic aspirations of helmholtz soliton pulses (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Lancaster, G., Lundie, M., Hodgkinson, T., Christian, J., & Mcdonald, G. (2011, May). Universality in relativistic aspirations of helmholtz soliton pulses. Presented at CLEO Europe - EQEC 2011, Munich, Germany

We propose a novel nonlinear Helmholtz equation for modelling pulses in optical waveguides. Exact analytical solitons are reported for a wide variety of nonlinearities. Connections to special relativity are explored.

Cities, innovation and expertise: experiences from a formative evaluation (2011)
Presentation / Conference
May, T., & Perry, B. (2011, May). Cities, innovation and expertise: experiences from a formative evaluation. Presented at Second Berlin Forum Innovation in Governance, Berlin, Germany

The dynamics of the knowledge-based era have combined with those of a multi-scalar international political economy to produce the ‘glocalisation’ of science (Swyndegouw,
1992). Public policies at supra-national and sub-national scales have been re-p... Read More about Cities, innovation and expertise: experiences from a formative evaluation.

Spatial audio processing for interactive TV services (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Batke, J., Spille, J., Kropp, H., Abeling, S., Shirley, B., & Oldfield, R. (2011, May). Spatial audio processing for interactive TV services. Presented at 130th AES Convention, London

FascinatE is a European funded project that aims at developing a system to allow end users to interactively navigate around a video panorama showing a live event, with the accompanying audio automatically changing to match the selected view. The audi... Read More about Spatial audio processing for interactive TV services.

People watching nature: “it’s all in the umwelt!” and “how do we value a view?” (2011)
Presentation / Conference
James, P. (2011, May). People watching nature: “it’s all in the umwelt!” and “how do we value a view?”. Presented at As Yet Impossible: in human performance symposium, The Lowry & MediaCity, Salford Quays

In response to the invitation to deliver a “provocation” as part of the “As Yet Impossible: in human performance” symposium I wrote three short essays. I was unsure what a provocation was, and if my thoughts and subsequent presentation would be prov... Read More about People watching nature: “it’s all in the umwelt!” and “how do we value a view?”.

The emotive city (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Rooney, J. (2011, May). The emotive city. Presented at 4th Annual Information Studies Postgraduate Symposium, Manchester Metropolitan University

How can a city, with its connections, people and architecture be viewed as a living cultural artefact? Every city has at least one ArtSpace; larger urban conurbations have a multitude of spaces devoted to art. The ArtSpace is a venue designed to con... Read More about The emotive city.

Rebuilding the 'self' in cancer survivorship (2011)
Presentation / Conference
Taylor, J. (2011, May). Rebuilding the 'self' in cancer survivorship. Presented at Vice-chancellor's early career researchers' presentations, University of Salford

In my doctoral studies I constructed a framework which demonstrated a structured way of understanding the relationship between identity and everyday human activities.
This presentation is about the potential for developing the theoretical framework... Read More about Rebuilding the 'self' in cancer survivorship.
