Jonathan spent almost 20 years practicing civil and structural engineering, working for consulting engineers and contractors, before joining the UoS to teach structural design. He worked on tall buildings, moving bridges, roller coasters, power stations, and dynamic assessment of nuclear structures.
He has served on many committees and panels at the Institution of Structural Engineers, where he is a marking and Chief examiner for the Chartered Membership examination, and Professional Reviewer.
He serves on the panel of the Joint Board of Moderators.

Teaching and Learning
I teach structural engineering in its broadest sense, mainly at masters level, covering both buildings and bridges in any structural form. My pedagogic research relates learning success to formative and summative testing at first year and masters level, and understanding structural behaviour
