Hansen’s disease is endemic in Brazil, with a high number of new cases reported every yer (ca. 28,000). Although natural infection of armadillos with M. leprae have been previously reported, and a close link between direct and indirect contact with humans is known, the significance of potential zoonotic transmission of leprosy remains neglected in Brazil in regards to Hansen's disease prevention and control. In this study we propose the application of genomic tools to investigate the prevalence of mycobacteriosis in armadillos, and determine the relatedness of M. leprae and M. lepromatosis strains infecting humans, armadillos and available in the environment.
