Spotlight on cardiac intensive care nursing (Editorial)

Abstract

Welcome to our second issue for 2022. The aims and scope of Nursing in Critical specify that it caters for “the diverse specialities of critical care nursing including surgery, medicine, cardiac, renal, neurosciences, haematology, accident and emergency and paediatrics”. Indeed, a substantial percentage of the manuscripts submitted to the journal tackle topics related to cardiac and coronary intensive care nursing. This led the editorial team to dedicate a special themed issue dedicated to this important area of critical care.

This themed issue includes two guest editorials highlighting the impact that COVID-19 has had and will continue to have on cardiovascular health1 and another discussing the increasing number of grown-ups (adults) with congenital heart disease.2 Both these editorials eloquently set the scene for this important issue. Indeed, acquired heart disease is one of the biggest causes of mortality and morbidity in developed countries3 and the prevalence of congenital heart disease among adults is increasing as most children with this condition are now surviving into adulthood.4

This issue includes a selection of papers on cardiac medical patients,5-8 on post-operative cardiac surgical patients9-15 and on nurses' experiences and skills in delivering highly specialized extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment.16, 17 We also have an interesting paediatric paper examining the impact on red blood cells when delivered through infusion pumps18 and a paper studying the impact of mattress type on the effectiveness of chest compressions,19 concluding with a provocative critical commentary on oxygen saturation targets in COVID-19 patients.20 The studies adopted a broad range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies and were conducted in various countries spread across four continents (Kuwait, Iran, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Israel, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the UK, and Brazil).
