Abstract

This chapter explores the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Common terminology, definitions, and the differing types of FGM will be considered, together with the identification of countries where it is practiced and its global prevalence. A historical overview, and legislation and policy related to the practice will be offered to help contextualise the problem of FGM. Following this, the physical, psychological/emotional, and social and economic impact of FGM on those exposed to the practice and their families and communities will be discussed. Risk and protective factors will be identified and finally the implications for policy, practice and research will be considered.
