Abstract

This Doctor of Musical Arts submission comprises of two volumes.
Volume 1 is a Critical Commentary entitled The Art of Collaboration (Four
Contrasting Compositions). Volume 2 contains four contrasting original
compositions.
Volume 1 is an analysis of the collaborative process that brought the
submitted works to realisation. It also contains commercially released
recordings on CD of all works, along with programmes and published articles.
In Volume 2, there are three works for Symphonic Wind Orchestra and
one for Violin and String Ensemble. The first work, Samurai, was composed in
1995 and revised early this year. The second work is The Miraculous Violin,
written in 2000 for violinist Peter Sheppard Skaerved and 1 Solisti di Zagreb'
string ensemble. The third work composed last year, Black Fire, was written
for conductor Dr. Gerald Loren Welker, Peter Sheppard Skaerved and the
Alabama Wind Ensemble. The final composition is Fanfares & Celebrations
commissioned by the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall for their
150th Anniversary celebration on 1st August 2007.
All submitted works have been published, Samurai by Maecenas Music
and The Miraculous Violin, Black Fire, and Fanfares & Celebrations by the
Studio Music Company.
