India’s non-alignment option in the Cold War scenario
Wu, F
Authors
Abstract
Following the independence, India found itself in a challenging global setting characteristic of the bi-polar confrontation and this, coupled with its stressed economic situation, made Indian policy-makers to adopt an approach of non-alignment, taking side with neither party of the cold war standoff and seeking maximum interests of its own by properly making advantage of the contradictions and disagreements between the United States and the Soviet Union. Later, the conclusion of the Indo-USSR treaty in the early 1970s met India’s needs for confronting China and Pakistan and achieving the regional hegemony, which actually went against the principles of non-alignment.
