Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with increasing age, but is not an inevitable consequence. It is often considered of little importance and just part of ‘getting old,’ but it is a major contributor to disability and dependence amongst older people, especially women. It is the commonest form of arthritis; a quarter of elderly with arthritis have ADL difficulties and significant disability is found in walking, reaching, stooping and physical function needing endurance and strength. With an ageing population, the impact of OA on individuals, society and health care provision is increasing. This chapter discusses the biopsychosocial impact of osteoarthritis, the treatment team, aims of occupational thereapy, relevant assessments and occupational thereapy interventions, and the evidence base for these.
