Abstract

Many people with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions (MSCs) can find performing everyday activities painful, tiring and frustrating, affecting their wellbeing.
Joint protection is not just a physical intervention. It is as an active coping strategy to improve daily tasks and role performance, reduce frustration, enhance perceptions of control and improve psychological status (Hammond et al 1999).
This chapter discusses: what joint protection is; aims and principles; why and when to use it; what people with arthritis’ understanding and perceptions of joint protection are; what facilitates or prevents them applying joint protection in daily life; evidence for joint protection effectiveness; how to provide effective joint protection education to facilitate behavior change; and some joint protection techniques. Because hand function is often disrupted in arthritis and MSCs, much joint protection literature focuses on the hands. Joint protection in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) will be a particular focus in this chapter.
