Abstract

This chapter reviews the key features of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, their treatment and management, as well as the clinical sequelae of these conditions and how they can interfere with meeting occupational performance goals. The impact of these conditions on hand function is also reviewed. The assessment process is discussed, including identifying relevant assessments and clinical tools to evaluate hand function and occupational performance for clients with these conditions. This is followed by discussion and review of the evidence for interventions to enable clients to continue, resume and/or adopt new occupational performance goals: including self-management strategies (such as joint protection/ergonomics, fatigue management, stress management, sleep hygiene), psychological strategies, hand therapy and work rehabilitation. Methods of helping clients understand and adopt self-management strategies are discussed in detail.
