Abstract
Honey bees are the most intensively studied of all social insects – quite possibly the most studied of any invertebrate animal. As such their diseases and pests have become well-known. It is unlikely that any other social insect is affected by such a diverse range of pests and pathogens, since the semidomestication of the western honey beeApis mellifera has led to an unnatural global distribution, resulting in exposure to many new diseases and pathogens. Due to the importance of honey bees, several books are dedicated to their pests and pathogens.
