The process of therapy is a fluid and multidimensional one. It may not be entirely straightforward to pinpoint when exactly the beginning of therapy moves in becoming the middle phase. However, the middle of therapy could be referred to as the ‘work phase’, characterised by those therapy tasks which seek to facilitate the client’s psychological change congruent with their identified goals.
This chapter presents discussion on the following:
• Basic therapeutic skills: managing and maintaining the relationship
• Methods of reviewing therapeutic work
• Managing attendance
• Ruptures and resolutions
• Use of the supervisory relationship
