Abstract
‘Aftermath’ was a new exhibition of work by Jill Randall, along with accompanying creative public engagement activities and collaboration with Dr Gaynor Bagnall, Directorate of Sociology, Criminology & Social Policy at the University of Salford to collect and measure audience impact data. The impact activities were supported by 2 awards from the University Research Impact Fund.
Jill Randall’s work as a contemporary visual artist contributes new insights and alternative ways of interpreting industrial heritage to audiences. The exhibition was the culmination of a research project working with Welsh and Cornish post-mining sites. Randall is using contemporary visual arts to explore the unique post-industrial ecology of Cornish Mining World Heritage sites, as a different way of telling their story, utilising the insights and knowledge gained to develop exhibitions, creative public engagement events and publications. Randall’s methodology explores the ways in which the visual arts can be a catalyst for regeneration and reappraisal of industrial legacy and heritage, provoking memory, and bringing new knowledge and understanding to these sites.
Against the backdrop of the rich context of the World Heritage site of Geevor Tin Mine, the exhibition drew strong connections between the environment of the working mine and its aftermath landscapes , offering a different way of interpreting these sites, their history, unique ecology, and alternative beauty. There were over 40 works in the exhibition, including drawings, prints, sculpture and video.
There were over 30,000 visitors to the exhibition and over 300 participants in workshops, questionnaires, focus groups and ‘walking interviews’.
