Abstract

It is likely that counsellors will work with former cult members even if this is not their speciality, and suggestions are given to help address therapeutic issues which may arise. There are challenges to establishing a therapeutic relationship with people whose trust has been abused and who have been harmed by people in a role of authority. Specialist psychoeducation about the processes of undue influence and coercive persuasion play a key role in recovery. Former cult members need help in re-establishing critical thinking and in accepting ambivalent and powerful emotions about their experience.
