Abstract

Emerging market firms (EMFs) operating in developed markets usually have substandard skills and abilities to manage risks associated with high resource commitments.

When they enter developed markets, EMFs face an additional liability where the national origins of the focal firm create legitimacy-based and capability-based disadvantages.

When undertaking overseas investments in the presence of such environmental uncertainties, EMFs can be expected to imitate the behavior of firms from their business groups to improve their legitimacy in the eyes of institutional actors.
