Abstract

The opening up of Poland economically and politically to global influences after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, coupled with the rise of transnational approaches to the study of film would seem to present ideal conditions for a transnational approach to Polish cinema. And yet not only have approaches to Polish cinema remained largely within a resolutely national framework, but Polish (and many other Eastern European cinemas) have also been virtually excluded from accounts of transnational cinema. This volume addresses this situation by introducing what are largely novel treatments of to Polish cinema, namely accounts of international reception, performance, co-productions and subversive émigré auteurs. As a result even more familiar films and filmmakers can be seen in a different and revealing light, while also shifting the focus to less well known filmmakers and aspects of Polish cinema.

These innovative approaches not only challenge the assumptions of scholarship about Polish cinema but pose important questions about the paradigms of both national and transnational cinemas. Whether it is the case of examining the international reception of key figures like Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieślowski, the performance of Polish actors like Krystyna Janda or Jerzy Radziwiłowicz, or the exilic works of filmmakers like Andrzej Żuławski and Walerian Borowczyk, this volume thoroughly decenters national cinema assumptions and challenges organic prejudices. In this way the volume presents an at once familiar and strange, recognisable yet transformed vision of Polish cinema.
