Abstract

Over the last few years microfinance has faced criticism for the quality of its customer services, excessive profiteerng, and divergence from its core mission of helping the poor. As the sector, in some nations, and
especially individual institutions have grown, there has been greater pressure for regulatory oversight. This can be
viewed as the microfinance industry’s governance turn . Us ing the European Code of Good Conduct for Microcredit
(hereafter “theCode”) Provision as a case study, this article seeks to explore whether there is a generic regulatory architecture for microfinance.
