Abstract

Edward Thomas, Birdsong and Flight by Judy Kendall (Cecil Woolf War Poet Series, 2014)

A monograph on Edward Thomas's use of birds, birdsong, nests, jizz and flight in his poetry and prose, with particular emphasis on his poetic processes and poetic vision. One chapter makes use of visual reenactments of some of Thomas's images to investigate creatively his use of birds. The book discusses many of Thomas's poems in detail. It acknowledges his debt to Japanese aesthetics, refers to several contemporary writers on birds and nature, including Robert MacFarlane, Tim Dee and John Videler's seminal book on the mechanics of bird flight Avian Flight. It also includes as epigraphs several contemporary bird haiku by key twenty-first century haiku poets.

Edward Thomas, Birdsong and Flight was included in the Guardian Round up of Best Nature Writing of 2014 (6 December 2014)
