Using online resources to facilitate teaching, learning and research in higher education: The case of the ‘criminology forum'

Abstract

Hosted by the Criminology degree programme at the University of Salford, the online Criminology Forum was set up in October 2012 as an outlet of information and to offer access to resources on the subject. The Forum also facilitated interest in criminological research methods. This was done by allowing students to learn about the subject under study and to explore further (through blogging opportunities, seminars, or, linking in with researchers, for instance), various issues in data generation. This enabled students to develop their own skills and knowledge on research methods in a more illustrative way. Although in its early stages, the Forum has initially been seen as delivering positive outcomes, as it has allowed students to engage with teaching and learning about research methods in an additional way to that traditionally taught in the classrooms. The poster will document the setting up, content and motivations behind the Criminology Forum, as well as any limitations as a teaching and learning resource tool. It will invite delegates to think reflectively about the value of such tools as an open education resource for the teaching and learning of research methods in social science subjects, such as criminology.
