Abstract

For too long, postnatal care has been a marginalised topic within research resulting in many women feeling abandoned after birth and ‘left to get on with it’ alone. Dr Wray will present data from an ethnography of women’s experiences of care and recovery after birth, which included periods of observations on two postnatal wards in the North West of England and a series of three in-depth interviews with17 women; once at 2/3 weeks after birth, then again at 3 months and finally at 6/7 months.

Julie is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing, Midwifery and Social Care, and is joint editor of The Practising Midwife. Her research interests include reproductive and women’s health, and in 2008 she was awarded the Iolanthe Research Fellowship to complete her doctorate.
