The grocers’ warehouse, Castlefield: the first true canal warehouse?

Authors
Abstract
This article studies the archaeology and development of the Grocers' Warehouse at the Castelfield terminus of the Bridgewater Canal in Manchester. Built around 1770 it argues that it was the first canal warehouse to use internal split-level loading and unloading canal arms, and that this development was the result of the particular geographical constraints of Castlefield. It also argues that the warehouse had a long-term impact on later canal warehouse design in Britain.
