In using a level 3 module offered to students on the Sociology and Criminology degree programmes at Liverpool John Moores University, the following reports on a small scale research study which sought to gather insight into student motivations for enrolling on and studying a module on Race, Racism and Identity. The study also took into consideration the role that the module plays in developing interest and skills for pathways into graduate employment.
In examining this, these questions addressed are:
• What should the teaching of ‘race’ be about?
• How do students sociologically / politically engage with debates, especially given the racial make-up of the lecture room and social experiences?
• Why do students choose to study ‘race’?
• What purpose does the study of 'race’ serve after degree completion?
