Abstract
The ‘Knowing the Social World’ project, of which this special issue is a
part, began life as a series of informal conversations between philosophers
of social science, social theorists and methodologists in the mid 1990s. As a
result it became apparent that whilst people in these areas were often
producing work with resonance that transcended the boundaries between
them, academic divisions of labour meant that inter disciplinary and
theory-practice dialogues were not as frequent as was hoped.
