Philosophical frameworks for understanding information Systems

Authors
Abstract
This is a major monograph which contains a significant amount of original thought. While, like to some other works, it attempts to apply philosophy to understanding information systems, it is original in several ways. It argues for a lifeworld-oriented approach to understanding IS. It argues for a need to understand the 'whole story' that is IS, of which five main areas of research and practice are delineated. It introduces the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd as uniquely able to address all the areas, and may be seen as a reference introduction to Dooyeweerd. It systematically formulates frameworks for understanding each of the five main areas:
• To understand everyday usage of computers and ICT(chapter 4);
• To throw new light on the nature of computers and information, and suggests new ways to approach the artificial intelligence question (chapter 5);
• To understand the whole of information systems development (chapter 6);
• To propose how computer science algorithms and computer languages and protocols can address the diversity of the world (chapter 7);
• To understand the interaction between information technology and society with an emphasis on responsibility (chapter 8).
