Abstract

Aim and Intended Learning Outcomes
The aim of this article is to provide insight into the psychological aspects of nursing care required by patients experiencing brief hospital admission for modern, elective surgery. After reading this article you should be able to -
- Appreciate the changing emphasis of care in modern, surgical nursing.
- State the main psychological themes associated with modern, surgical nursing.
- Describe the individual aspects of psychological intervention which seek to enhance the patients’ experience of modern, elective surgery.
- Recognise the requirements for the implementation of more formal programmes of psychological care within modern surgery.
