Abstract

This publication reports on a national study into the relevance of child maltreatment concerns when child deaths are dealt with in hospital (multi-disciplinary) settings. The research used ethnographic methods (non-participant observation, interviews, documentary analysis) and a national survey of paediatricians to ask:
- what differences existed between deaths attributed to maltreatment and those that were not.
- how and to what extent maltreatment is a consideration when a child dies.
The research reports on the data/analyis and makes recommendations about professional practice regarding child death investigation/review, staff and patient care, and information collection processes.
