Abstract

For the fifth consecutive year, Fisheye sums up a year of explorations, curations and digital publications in a physical book with a refined aesthetic. It is almost an oxymoron, as the two worlds seem so far apart. However, this ensemble that you are holding in your hands is our answer to a dual vocation, both intrinsic and consubstantial: that of discovering and helping discover the way contemporary photographers see the world, and that of exploring the link-in terms of inspiration and creation--which unite all these bodies of work. In 376 pages, 291 photographers, 564 images and almost 1.5 kg, we take the time to observe. All of these series were featured over this past year, i.e., during the pandemic. A suspended time, where dreamlike images have taken on an unprecedented role in our mostly often direct, even crude, relationship with the world almost as if it were necessary to find crossroads to transmit a mental projection, to reinvent a relationship with reality in order to better embellish it. Fisheye Photo Review 2021.22 reads like a metaverse: a parallel universe in which one comes to seek one's own perspectives and define one's priorities. This book is a tool, a bridge, an object of mediation.

It does not read chronologically but offers new visual fields. With it, inspiration will come back to you. International and plural, our selection cannot be defined as one, as it is rather a reflection on the state of current photographic creation. This book is the result of the work of the Fisheye editorial team, which curates, every day, new photographic projects published on our website www.fisheyemagazine.fr and our Instagram @fisheyelemag. It is also the result of more than 1.4 million uses of our hashtag #fisheyelemag. Always on the front line, we are looking, sorting, selecting and highlighting what makes sense and contributes to a graphic renaissance. This process has elevated us: from mere medium, we have become actors in visual production alongside our partners. I would like to thank Christian Dior Parfums, who have helped us see this project through, and who actively contribute to photographic creation with a Prize dedicated to this field. Here is the adventure of Fisheye, a magazine that remains 100% independent and cannot be summarised in these pages. But they do highlight our will to showcase the talent of photographers from all over the world.
