Abstract
In this talk, some of the metamaterials and devices that recently have been demonstrated in the authors' lab are discussed. These include graded-index lenses, birefringent elements that utilize a combination of geometry and material properties to separate light into orthogonal polarizations, frequency-selective resonators and Bragg gratings, and metal-dielectric nanostructures that can achieve extremely tight field confinement, an metal-semiconductor-dielectric nanolasers. Characterization tools, including heterodyne near field optical microscope, will also be discussed. As an example on using the nanophotonics process, a monolithically integrated nonlinear pulse compressor fabricated on a silicon chip that produces compression factors as high as 7.0 for 7ps input pulses at a low input peak power of 10W is presented.
