Abstract
Purpose: This paper appraises the role of NVivo and an analytical framework to understand the lived experience of cultural change within a UK Higher Education institution and its connection to ‘sticky’ organisational culture.
Methods: As part of Salford’s Enabling Student Success (ESS) Case Study (which formed part of Advance HE’s Collaborative Development Fund 2021 project, Inclusive Institutions) NVivo was utilised as part of the project teams’ analytical approach to understanding the lived experience of cultural change within Higher Education. The project collated data from a survey and focus groups with colleagues across Salford University.
The analytical approach utilised NVivo to conduct a three-stage thematic analysis built around an analytical framework. This began with a two-stage coding process in NVivo, adopting both In-Vivo and Pattern Coding Techniques and mapping the codes against institutional values and contextual information. This enabled the analysis to draw out what cultural change felt like for participants and therefore define the cultural enablers that drive transformational change within the University of Salford.
Results: The analysis revealed that transformational success was strongly related to how change feels to staff at all levels. It was established through consideration of the lived experience and the understanding of pre-existing culture; more effective communication and a more connected inclusive approach were evident in driving transformational change.
Implications: This presentation highlights the value of using a non-linear process within an analytical framework that enables the co-creation of a narrative of inclusive transformation in Higher Education.
